NH Route 112 runs 34 miles through the White Mountains and is New England’s classic foliage drive. visitnh.gov puts the area’s historical peak at October 5–10. It’s a long day from Boston, so plan the miles: a three-day rental includes 300, enough for the whole trip.

I-90 takes you straight to the hill towns and farm country of western Massachusetts, without leaving the state. MassDOT’s toll for the full Pike to West Stockbridge is $5.95 with a Massachusetts E-ZPass. Make it an overnight trip and a multi-day rental keeps the mileage easy.
