How Old Do You Have to Be to Rent an Exotic Car in Massachusetts?

What is the minimum age to rent an exotic car in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts law sets no minimum rental age at all. Not 21, not 25 — none. The number you have to clear is set entirely by the company you're renting from, and in the exotic segment that number runs from 21 to 25.

At Bluebell Exotics the minimum is 21. Across the wider market, Royalty Exotic Cars rents from 18, Gotham Dream Cars from 21, and Imagine Lifestyles, LVC Exotics and Hertz Dream Cars all require 25.

There's a widely repeated claim online that "the minimum legal age to rent a car in Massachusetts is 21." Several aggregator sites state it as law. It isn't law. Here's what the statute actually says, and what it means for you.

Does Massachusetts have a rental age law?

No. M.G.L. c.90 §32C is the only section of the Massachusetts motor vehicle chapter that sets qualifications for who may rent a vehicle, and it imposes exactly two:

"…nor shall any such person… lease any such vehicle for operation on any public way by any person whom he knows or has reason to believe to be under the influence of intoxicating liquor or of any drug. No lessor shall lease any motor vehicle or trailer until the lessee shows that he or his authorized operator is the holder of a duly issued license to operate the type of motor vehicle or trailer which is being leased."

Not intoxicated. Properly licensed. That is the complete statutory list.

The rental cluster of Chapter 90 — §§32C, 32D, 32E, 32E½, 32E¾, 32F, 32H and 32J — contains no age provision anywhere. The only sections in the entire chapter that mention age (§2A, §8B, §8M, §24P) have nothing to do with rentals.

Two states do set a statutory minimum: New York and Michigan, both at 18. Massachusetts is not one of them — which is precisely why Massachusetts appears in no rental company's "state exceptions" table.

So what do the big rental chains require in Massachusetts?

Because Massachusetts imposes nothing, each chain applies its national default. Every one of their exception tables names only Michigan and New York (Hertz adds Alabama and Nebraska), so Massachusetts falls through to the standard number:

So in practice you can rent a car in Massachusetts at 20 — from Hertz. Everyone else on that table starts at 21.

Then why can't a 21-year-old rent a Lamborghini?

Because the majors refuse to rent luxury and specialty vehicles to anyone under 25 — regardless of state law. Avis states it directly:

"Renters younger than 25 may not rent vehicles in the following car classes: Full-Size SUVs, Luxury, Minivans, Passenger Vans, Premium SUVs, Specialty Cars."

Enterprise's permitted list for under-25 renters tops out at a standard SUV — nothing premium, luxury or specialty.

That produces the sentence worth remembering: *in Massachusetts you can rent a car at 21, but you cannot rent this car at 21 — at least not from a national chain.*

It's not arbitrary. It's underwriting. A rental fleet's insurer prices young-driver risk against vehicle value, and at a certain point the premium stops making sense. Every rental company draws the line where their own carrier draws it, which is exactly why the numbers differ from company to company.

What do exotic rental companies actually require?

Here is the current published position across the segment, verified from each company's own requirements page:

So the honest answer to "what's the industry standard" is: there isn't one. Rental companies set floors between 21 and 25 depending on their insurer, with 25 most common on the highest-value cars.

Two of these companies publish what happens if you try to work around it. Gotham Dream Cars and Royalty Exotic Cars carry identical language:

"Minimum Age requirements are strictly enforced and ensure proper insurance protection. All renters who allow an underage driver will be fined $2,500 and their rental will be immediately canceled."

Letting a friend drive is not a grey area.

Can you rent a Lamborghini at 18?

In Massachusetts, from a licensed rental company — realistically, no. No Boston exotic rental company publishes a floor below 21. Nationally, Royalty Exotic Cars in Las Vegas is the notable exception at 18.

Peer-to-peer is the other route: Turo accepts guests from 18 on its Standard and Minimum protection plans. Two things to know before that looks like a solution. Turo's Premier plan — the $0-deductible one — isn't available under 21 and isn't available on any vehicle worth over $60,000, which excludes every Lamborghini on the platform. So an 18-year-old renting a Lamborghini on Turo is carrying either a $500 or a $3,000 deductible, on a car worth over a quarter of a million dollars, with no coverage at all for interior or mechanical damage. Can a 17-year-old rent a car for prom?

No — nowhere, on any platform. The lowest floor anywhere in the market is 18, and that's a peer-to-peer platform, not a rental company. A high-school senior cannot be the renter.

What does work, and what parents actually do:

A parent rents the car and drives. The parent is the named renter, the parent's insurance and license are on the agreement, and the car is used for photographs at the house or the venue and for the drive there. This is legitimate, common, and the version of prom-car rental that a serious rental company will book.

The student never drives. Adding an under-21 driver to an exotic rental agreement isn't possible at any company on the list above, and the $2,500 penalty language quoted earlier is what happens when people try.

For arrival transport, use a chauffeur service. If the point is being dropped at the door rather than photographs in the driveway, a chauffeured vehicle is the right product and the age question disappears entirely. What else do you need besides age?

Age is the first gate. There are four more.

A valid driver's license for the class of vehicle — required by §32C, and it must be a real license, not a permit.

Proof of full-coverage insurance — if you're renting on your own policy. Bluebell Exotics' requirement is $100,000 / $300,000 / $50,000 liability limits plus comprehensive and collision at actual cash value; renters who can't clear that bar rent on the $10,000 security deposit instead. Massachusetts compulsory minimums are only $25,000 / $50,000 / $30,000 for policies issued or renewed after July 1, 2025 under Acts of 2024, c.275 — so the bar is four to six times the state floor on liability, and the state doesn't require collision or comprehensive at all. A credit card in the renter's own name for the security deposit. At Bluebell Exotics that's $2,000 with valid insurance and $10,000 without — set by your insurance position rather than by the car, and it's a hold, not a charge. Renting on a foreign license or an International Driving Permit adds $3,000 on top.

A clean driving record. Most rental companies run an MVR check. Recent major violations end the conversation regardless of age.

What if you're visiting from another country?

You can drive on your home country's license. M.G.L. c.90 §10 provides that a nonresident holding a valid license from their home state or country may operate the vehicle types that license covers, provided the license is with them.

An International Driving Permit is required only conditionally — when your license is not in English and carries no English translation. The RMV's rule:

"If the foreign license is not in English or does not have an English translation, must have one of the following: An International Driving Permit (IDP); A Translation into English of a Foreign License document…"

Two traps worth knowing:

An IDP is a translation, not a license. AAA — one of only two organizations authorized by the US State Department to issue them — states that IDPs "are not intended to replace valid U.S. state licenses and should only be used as a supplement to a valid license." Hertz says the same in operational terms: "You will not be allowed to rent a vehicle with only an International Driver's Permit." An IDP costs $20, plus $10 for photos.

The RMV does not recognize novelty documents. It states that it "does not recognize a document labeled as an 'International Driver License', 'International Driving Permit' or any other document that allegedly confers driving privileges." If you bought one online, it's worthless here.

Rental companies also add their own requirements. Hertz requires a passport in the same name as the foreign license. Enterprise requires an IDP outright when the license uses a non-Latin script (Russian, Japanese, Arabic), and merely recommends one for Latin-script languages.
